5 Tips for Making Great How-To Videos

In our last Video Lion, we spoke about the immense popularity of how-to videos, and how they are good for business. Now, it’s time to get into the weeds and talk about the best practices in creating a successful how-to video. That is what we will check in today’s Video Lion

Ok, let’s get to it right away. There are FIVE basic principles you should follow when creating a great how-to video that will attract viewers and boost your online presence.

1. Be the Expert You Are

Stick to what you’re good at. You want always to talk about issues you dominate completely. That doesn’t mean you need to be super narrow in your topics but always look to talk and teach on subjects you are the expert on.

2. Be Relevant

When you are choosing a topic for your how-to video, don’t simply go with your gut feeling. If you know who is your target audience, you should make sure the topic is something that would be interesting or useful for them. If you’re not sure about that, a great way to check it is to simply ask. For example, run a poll on Instagram Stories or LinkedIn offering two options of topics and let your followers tell you what they prefer.

3. Make it brief

Since you are the expert, there will always be a temptation of going into too many details. That will make your video too long and overly technical, and you may lose your audience. Remember, less is more. Try to say the essential and most important in no more than 2 or 3 minutes.

4. Be Practical

A good How-To video will always teach something useful, give a solution to a problem. You should teach something that viewers can immediately use to solve whatever problem they have.

5. Make it Easy

You may be the expert, but your audience is not. Avoid using professional terminology that only nerds like you would know. Easily understandable language goes a long way. Build your video with a clear structure. You should break your script into a few clear steps that are easy to follow.

That’s it. Follow these simple steps and your how-to videos will start bringing you results.
